Hospital for Special Care is a private, non-profit long-term acute care hospital based in New Britain, Connecticut. Founded in 1941, it is the fourth largest free-standing long-term acute care hospital in the United States and one of only two in the nation serving both adults and children.
The hospital provides complex rehabilitation and chronic disease treatment across a range of specialized centers, including autism care, brain injury rehabilitation, cardiac care, neuromuscular care, pulmonary rehabilitation, spinal cord injury care, and complex pediatric care. Its Autism Center holds the distinction of being the nation's first Patient-Centered Specialty Practice recognized by the National Committee for Quality Assurance. The facility also offers comprehensive outpatient therapy and rehabilitation services.
Beyond clinical care, Hospital for Special Care operates community-oriented programs such as an Aquatic and Fitness Center, an Adaptive Sports Program, the Ivan Lendl Adaptive Sports Camp, and Manes & Motions, a therapeutic horseback riding program. The organization maintains a special commitment to serving people with disabilities.
